Bit of History
Below was written Three
years ago and Globalstar
is still
around and growing strong!!!
The first time I laid eyes on
the new phone was at the SSCA Marine cruisers GAM in Melbourne, Florida. Size wise it was
about what I expected...A little big for a cell phone but this was so much
more! The Globalstar rep and I walked out to a card table with laptop and
the Globalstar 1600 Satphone sitting on it's side...antenna pointing up to the heavens.
Go ahead...Give it a try! Well ok I
will! The first thing I did was to bring up some really big web pages and
waited for them to appear. I figured this would take a while and I better
go grab a good tech manual and wait. I was pleasantly surprised by
the fairly quick downloads coming across the screen and continued trying
to find a fault with this new toy of theirs....I couldn't!
I was told I could expect good
results with e-mail as well and could use my own e-mail account already
established with an ISP so no need to change that. Just tell the E-mail
client (your e-mail program) where to get a connection, Globalstar, and
go. Sure enough it worked great! I could just picture myself out to sea
with no land in site catching up on the latest happenings back on
shore....Great product!
Well, that was three years
ago and because I believe in this product and feel strongly that it could
be of great use to our customers, I became a dealer! As there's nothing
like hands on experience to prove a products worth, I love giving demo's
to cruisers that have not experienced this technology before. They are
completely surprised by the voice quality and convenience of this
phone...As was I! Just remember
that Globalstar is on a "Build-out" kick so check the coverage
map (Below) to make sure a country of interest has coverage.
Not able to just leave a good
thing alone... I wondered how I could improve on this concept if that was
possible. The first improvement came in the form of a major adaptation of the Globalstar "Mobile Car
Kit". This was overhauled and modified for harsh marine environments
and ease of installations aboard vessels of all sizes.
Globalstar has
now added a weather proof "Radome" antenna cover where the
external satellite antenna simply drops in and secure the cover! Also a
transportable hardened version (Lunchbox) for more land type use in mining etc. and now a
(Kit) very
convenient Pelican case that holds: phone, AC/DC power cables, Data cable
and documentation making water proof storage easy.
The most significant advance is our
services known as FastSuite, that compress web
and e-mail content giving customers 56K dial-up Internet performance using
a Globalstar satphone! If you do any amount of e-mailing, web surfing
wirelessly or just want to cut you Globalstar minutes bill in half, you need
FastSuite!
It's like having a
56K dial-up phone modem
hook up instead of 9,600 baud wireless connection! MarineNet Wireless is offering
FastSuite in 6, 9 or 12 month subscriptions to a ISP service (like an AOL or Hotmail) but designed for wireless
connections ONLY and MUCH faster then
if you tried to use a land based ISP's while wireless. Best part of
FastSuite is it works on Cellular/GSM and landline with your existing
land ISP accounts
(Perfect for some really bad island telephone circuits)
MarineNet
Wireless maintains a "Wireless Friendly" Website built just for wireless
internet customers... It started as a very simple website... void of fu fu graphics that clog up web connections or, slow
down speeds to a crawl. Now this wireless friendly site offers NWS weather
products to quickly get charts, text forecasts, US coastal radar, global
news and much more. Free to MarineNet customers as part of your FastSuite
service.
Currently that is just what we
do at MarineNet Wireless and it looks like FastSuite is showing a 70%
improvement over non-processed/compressed internet E-mail/Web service and works fine with Internet Explorer,
Netscape, Outlook Express, Outlook, Eudora and many more! FastSuite
software is easy to install and operate and the best part is that it's
part of the MarineNet Wireless package...
